Menden (Sauerland), located southeast of Dortmund, is home to approximately 52,000 residents. Since 2013, the city has had a climate protection plan in place that aims to reduce climate-damaging greenhouse gases based on the principle that “a climate-friendly future means a livable future.” As a key measure, the city of Menden relies on vilisto’s digital heat management system. By providing heating based on actual demand, this system reduces energy consumption in buildings, which in turn leads to a lower carbon footprint.

Vilisto technology is used in various locations, including Menden City Hall. There, 313 smart thermostats automatically heat a room only when it is in use. When occupancy sensors detect that a room is unoccupied—such as on weekends or after work—the thermostats automatically lower the temperature. As a result, Menden saves 19.5 percent of its usual energy consumption. This reduces CO2 emissions by 30.8 metric tons and saves 22,569 euros in heating costs and CO2 taxes.
